ATLANTA: For the second time this season, Jesse Chavez has returned to the Atlanta Braves for his seventh stint.
Prior to their game against the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday, the Braves added the 41-year-old reliever to their major league roster. The veteran right-hander’s addition to Atlanta’s roster is the seventh overall since 2009 and the sixth since 2021.
After being called up on April 1, Chavez had his first appearance with the Braves this season, giving up two runs in three innings. A few days later, he was free to sign with the team again after being released.
The Braves placed right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach on the 60-day disabled list and optioned left-hander Dylan Dodd to Triple-A Gwinnett. Due to a fractured right elbow, Schwellenbach was placed on the injured list on Wednesday, perhaps terminating his season.
In Saturday’s 9–6 loss to Baltimore in 10 innings, the Braves used seven pitchers, including Dodd, in a bullpen game due to Schwellenbach’s injury. In the series finale on Sunday, that led to the decision to add Chavez for pitching depth.
In December 2009, Chavez made his Braves debut by trading for reliever Rafael Soriano from Tampa Bay. After agreeing to a minor league contract, he was a member of Atlanta’s 2021 World Series winning squad.
In 18 seasons, Chavez has thrown for nine different organizations, including stints with Toronto, the Los Angeles Angels, Texas, and the Chicago Cubs. He made his main league debut with Pittsburgh in 2008.
