LONDOOpen runner-up, NU.S.For the third time in four years, Taylor Fritz advanced to the Wimbledon quarterfinals on Sunday as his injured opponent, Jordan Thompson, gave up after 41 minutes, down 6-1, 3-0.
It was obvious that the unseeded Thompson’s power and mobility were hampered. The Australian had back and leg problems going into the match, and after leaving the court for a medical timeout during Sunday’s second set, he stopped trying to play for three more points.
The No. 5-seeded Fritz stated, “It’s obviously not the way that I want to go through.” It’s just depressing. He deserves respect for coming out. He’s not feeling well.
After playing two five-setters and one four-setter earlier in the competition, Fritz’s workweek was shorter.
The American will now play Russian No. 17 seed Karen Khachanov on Tuesday in an attempt to advance to the semifinals, which neither player has advanced to at the All England Club.
Kamil Majchrzak was defeated by Khachanov. Sunday, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3.
Since Khachanov finished with more than twice as many winners as unforced errors, 44-21, he commented, “To be honest, today was a really great performance, at least from my side.”
Majchrzak, rated 109th, was participating in his first major fourth-round match. Prior to Wimbledon, he had lost six straight Grand Slam games.
At the Australian Open in 2023 and the U.S. Open in 2022, Khachanov has advanced to the Grand Slam semifinals twice. When Fritz reached the final at Flushing Meadows in September and lost to Jannik Sinner, the number one seed, it was the first time he had advanced that far.
What else took place on Sunday at Wimbledon?
Later men’s matches were Nicolas Jarry vs. Cam Norrie, two-time reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz vs. No. 14 Andrey Rublev. Sonay Kartal vs. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, No. 13 Amanda Anisimova vs. No. 30 Linda Noskova, No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka vs. No. 24 Elise Mertens, and fortunate loser Solana Sierra vs. Laura Siegemund were the women’s fourth-round matches on the Sunday schedule.
On Monday, who will play at the All England Club?
