Charlotte County deputy killed in line of duty to be honored with memorial highway

Florida’s Port Charlotte. In honor of Sgt. Elio Diaz, who was killed last year while on duty, a section of U.S. 41 in Charlotte County will be designated as an honorary designation.

Beginning July 1, the area between Melbourne Street and Church Street on U.S. 41 will be known as the “Sergeant Elio Diaz Memorial Highway.”

During a traffic stop in December 2023, Sergeant Elio Diaz was shot and killed by a subject he was attempting to assist.

On June 13, 2025, the governor signed House Bill 987, which includes the highway designation.
