PRAGUEOn Friday, the 59th edition of the Czech Karlovy Vary International Film Festival began with tributes to American actor Peter Sarsgaard and Luxembourg actress Vicky Krieps.
At the opening event, Sarsgaard and Krieps will both be presented with the Festival President’s Award.
Billy Ray’s 2003 film Shattered Glass, for which Sarsgaard received a Golden Globe nomination, will be shown at the festival. The film Love Me Tender (2025) will be screened at the festival in remembrance of Krieps, who won a European Film Award for best actress for her portrayal of the disobedient Empress Sisi in Corsage (2022).
Dakota Johnson, an American actress who will be given the same honor on Sunday, was scheduled to present her two most recent films, Materialists and Splitsville.
On July 12, the festival will come to a close with a tribute to Swedish actor Stellan Skarsg, who has made a significant contribution to global film. He will introduce Sentimental Value, his latest film, which was directed by Joachim Trier and took home the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival this year.
Hollywood star Michael Douglas arrives at the festival with a freshly restored print of the 1975 Oscar-winning film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, which was produced by Douglas and Saul Zaentz and directed by the late Czech filmmaker Milo Forman. This is a much-anticipated event.
Twelve films will be evaluated by the grand jury for the Crystal Globe, the top honor.
