Duncan Robinson exercises option to terminate contract with Heat, though he could return to Miami

MiamiOn Sunday, Duncan Robinson exercised his early termination option for the last year of his Miami Heat contract, choosing unrestricted free agency.

The ruling does not exclude him from rejoining the Heat. Robinson could have been guaranteed $9.9 million of the roughly $20 million contract for the upcoming season if he had allowed his option to expire on Sunday. Robinson is the team’s all-time leader in 3-pointers made.

He now has the option to sign with a new team, agree to a sign-and-trade for another player, or negotiate a new contract with the Heat. The NBA’s official start of free agency is Monday night; Robinson had until Sunday to choose whether to terminate him.

There aren’t many NBA success stories like the 31-year-old Robinson. He played his way to Michigan, went undrafted, and was given a chance by the Heat after beginning his collegiate career at Division III Williams.

Robinson then established himself as a vital member of the rotation. After making at least 232 3-pointers in each of the following three seasons, he was virtually a full-time starter after playing in just 15 games as a rookie.

In less games than any other player in NBA history, he reached several 3-point milestones, including 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, and 1,000 3-pointers. His 1,202 3-pointers are the most in the team’s history.

In his seven NBA seasons, Robinson has shot 39.7% from 3-point range and averaged 11.3 points.
