Flossie weakens to tropical storm off Mexico’s Pacific coast

CITY OF MEXICOThe U.S. National Hurricane Center reported that Hurricane Flossie weakened to a tropical storm Thursday near the southwestern Pacific coast of Mexico, with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph (95 kph).

Swells, potentially fatal surf, and rip currents were predicted for the Baja California peninsula and southwest Mexico in the days ahead, but it is predicted to stay offshore and subside on Thursday.

According to the Miami-based center, Flossie was traveling northwest off the coast of Mexico at 9 mph (15 kph) and was roughly 205 miles (330 km) south-southwest of Cabo San Lucas. It was predicted to rain in multiple Mexican states while avoiding the coast for a few days.

Late on Tuesday, Flossie strengthened into a strong Category 3 hurricane, although it weakened over the course of Wednesday.
