NEW YORKAccording to the final ballot totals released on Wednesday, designated hitter Shohei Ohtani will be joined by first baseman Freddie Freeman and catcher Will Smith as the three fan-selected starts for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the All-Star Game.
Second baseman Gleyber Torres and outfielders Riley Greene and Javier B. Es were voted in at their positions for the July 15 game against Atlanta’s Truist Park, meaning Detroit will have three fan-picked starts for the first time since 2007.
Along with Ronald Acu Jr. of the host Braves, the Chicago Cubs’ Pete Crow-Armstrong and Kyle Tucker were selected for the NL outfield.
San Diego third baseman Manny Machado, New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor, and Arizona second baseman Ketel Marte were also selected as NL starts.
Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson, Toronto first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and Seattle catcher Cal Raleigh. Ryan O’Hearn, a designated hitter for Baltimore, and Jos Ramrez, a third baseman for Cleveland, were selected as AL starters.
Wilson will become just the second rookie shortstop to start an All-Star Game after Ron Hansen of Baltimore, who did so in 1960. Wilson defeated Bobby Witt Jr. of Kansas City 52% to 48%. In 2004, Wilson’s father, Jack, was selected to the Pittsburgh All-Star team.
For the second time in three years, there will be nine rookies starting. Crow-Armstrong, Lindor, Smith, and Tucker will join Wilson in the NL lineup, while Greene, O Hearn, Raleigh, and Torres will join him in the AL lineup.
In the closest vote, Bez defeated Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels 26% to 24% to secure the third AL outfield spot.
When Ohtani was selected as the NL DH with the highest total in his league, Aaron Judge, an outfielder for the New York Yankees, won a starting position last week as the top vote-getter in the first round. Voting is divided into two phases under regulations that went into effect in 2022, and the second round took place from Monday through Thursday.
Catcher Ivn Rodriguez, left fielder Magglio Ordez, and second baseman Plicido Polanco were Detroit’s three selected starts for the 2007 match against San Francisco.
For the seventh time and his fifth as a starter, Freeman was selected as a senior All-Star. He’ll go back to Atlanta, where he was a star from 2010 to 21.
Both Judge and Machado were chosen as starters for the eighth time.
Last year’s elected starters included Guerrero, Judge, Marte, Ohtani, and Ramrez.
On Sunday, the pitchers and reserves will be revealed.
