Golden Knights get Marner in sign-and-trade from Leafs and give him 8-year, $96M deal, reports say

LAS VEGASAccording to several sources, Mitch Marner signed an eight-year, $96 million contract with the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday after being acquired by the team in a sign-and-trade with Toronto.

For the 2032–2033 season, Marner, 28, will have $12 million deducted from his salary cap. He just achieved career-highs of 102 points and 75 assists.

Marner would have been the most sought-after player starting at noon EDT Tuesday, but according to reports, Vegas sent center Nicolas Roy to Toronto to jump the line on him.

As the organization revealed that veteran defenseman Alex Pietrangelo would be taking a break from hockey to undergo bilateral femur repair, which general manager Kelly McCrimmon stated had no assurance of success, the trade came together. In part, Pietrangelo’s placement on long-term injured reserve allows the Golden Knights to accommodate Marner inside the salary cap.
