MiamiOff the Pacific coast of Mexico, Hurricane Flossie intensified into a Category 2 cyclone Tuesday morning, according to forecasters.
According to the National Hurricane Center, rain was falling over portions of coastal Mexico during Flossie, which had maximum sustained winds of 100 mph (155 kph). The core of the hurricane was located 245 kilometers (150 miles) southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico.
At 10 mph (17 kph), Flossie was heading northwest and was predicted to stay in that direction for the next few days. Forecasters predicted that by Tuesday evening, the system will have left southwestern Mexico.
It was predicted that the hurricane would keep getting stronger and might become a major hurricane as early as Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning. When sustained winds reach 111 mph (180 kph) or more, a significant storm is categorized as Category 3 or above.
