A short-lived tropical depression or tropical storm may form later Friday or on Saturday and move inland over the Carolinas by Sunday or early Monday, according to current satellite trends and model guidance.

Chantal is the next name on the list.

Air Force hurricane hunters are expected to enter the system just before 2:00 p.m. ET on Friday after departing Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi at noon to conduct an investigation.

The good news is that before the system advances inland, environmental conditions will only slightly support development over the next day or two.

As dry air lurks nearby, there will be some wind shear, which will help control what forms. This weekend, a tropical depression or low-grade tropical storm is still predicted by intensity guidance.

Periods of intense rainfall that extend from the Florida peninsula today into the coastal Carolinas this weekend will pose the biggest hazard, as we have discussed in newsletters this week.

Although it can be heavy at times, widespread flash flooding is not expected, and the main impact of the rainfall is expected to occur around the Fourth of July vacation weekend.

Beachgoers from east-central Florida northward into the Outer Banks of North Carolina this weekend are also at risk from a moderate risk of rip currents.
