BALTIMOREThe Texas Rangers defeated the Orioles 7-0 on Wednesday night thanks to Jacob deGrom holding Baltimore hitless until Colton Cowser’s leadoff single in the eighth inning.

Before walking Jackson Holliday on a high and outside full count slider, the right-hander, who turned 37 on June 19, dismissed his first 18 batters. After leading 0–2 in the count, he threw four consecutive balls and walked Ryan O. Hearn with two outs in the seventh.

On a 1-1 fastball, Cowser grounded a single to right.

DeGrom (8-2) walked two and struck out seven to win his fourth consecutive decision. He started 20 of 24 batters with strikes, threw 59 of 89 pitches for strikes, and averaged 98.4 mph with his fastball. He was a two-time Cy Young Award winner and a four-time All-Star.

On July 17, 2016, DeGrom pitched a one-hitter for the New York Mets against Philadelphia after starter Zach Elfin hit a single in the third inning. DeGrom has four complete games in 234 starts.

Baltimore was shut out for the eighth time this season and restricted to one hit for the third time, with three consecutive outs from Jacob Webb and Cole Winn. In their last five games, the Orioles have suffered four losses.

Texas won its fourth consecutive road series thanks to three RBIs from Josh Jung, who also hit a two-run homer against Brandon Young (0–2) and a run-scoring single in the second.

Adolis Garc’s sacrifice fly was part of a three-run fourth inning that saw runs scored by singles from Corey Seager and Marcus Semien. Jonah Heim also hit a home run against Scott Blewett in the sixth inning.

Until Ram iro Laureano’s leadoff single in the seventh inning on Tuesday, left-hander Jacob Latz kept the Orioles scoreless. Gary Sanchez singled off reliever JT Brubaker to start the eighth inning of the Yankees’ seven hitless innings against Baltimore on Saturday.

Crucial moment

Holliday at second and O’Hearn at first were the ideal positions for Cowser’s single.
