The British driver, who has frequently failed to exhibit his best pace in qualifying this year, appeared to be relieved by Norris’ strong performance in qualifying on Saturday, where he was fastest by more than half a second.

Following a surprisingly competitive day for the Italian squad, Charles Leclerc starts second for Ferrari, while teammate Lewis Hamilton comes in fourth.

After the Australian qualified third, Piastri will be directly behind his teammate on the grid and ahead of Norris by 22 points in the standings. Pierre Gasly of Alpine spun in front of Piastri, forcing him to quit his final lap, but he expressed confidence that he would have the pace to contend on Sunday.

After complained about his lack of grip throughout qualifying, defending champion Max Verstappen, currently ranked third in the standings, starts seventh on the grid.
