Margate, FL — A South Florida man was arrested early Sunday morning after allegedly discharging a firearm into the air in a residential neighborhood, prompting a swift response from Margate Police Department. The incident, which occurred shortly before 1 a.m., has raised concerns among local residents about public safety and illegal firearm use.
According to a statement from the Margate Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 500 block of Northwest 80th Avenue after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire in the area. Upon arriving at the scene, officers identified a suspect matching the description provided by witnesses. The man was detained without incident.
The suspect has been identified as 25-year-old Malik Johnson of Margate. Authorities say Johnson admitted to firing a pistol into the air as part of what he described as a “celebratory act.” No injuries or property damage were reported.
Following his arrest, Johnson was taken into custody and charged with discharging a firearm in public, a first-degree misdemeanor under Florida Statute 790.
Margate Police emphasized that firing a gun into the air is not only dangerous but also illegal, regardless of intent. “What goes up must come down,” said Margate Police Officer Laura Corbin in a press release. “Even when fired upwards, bullets can travel significant distances and pose a threat to anyone in their path. It’s reckless and inexcusable behavior.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stray bullets resulting from celebratory gunfire have caused numerous injuries and fatalities around the country. The agency has previously issued warnings about the dangers of unauthorized and careless weapon discharges in public settings.
Johnson’s actions drew criticism from neighbors, some of whom were woken up by the sound of gunfire. “It was terrifying. I thought someone was being shot in front of our building,” said Jasmine Reyes, a resident who lives a few doors down from the incident location. “In a neighborhood like this, we don’t expect gunshots in the middle of the night—especially not over something as senseless as a celebration.”
Officers recovered a semi-automatic handgun from the scene. Initial investigations suggest that the weapon was legally purchased but not properly stored. Authorities confirmed there were no prior violations or ongoing investigations involving Johnson before this incident. Alcohol consumption was suspected as a factor, although toxicology reports are still pending.
A background check revealed that Johnson does not hold a concealed weapon license through Florida’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, which manages the state’s firearm permit program.
In addition to the firearms charge, police are investigating whether Johnson violated any local noise ordinances or endangered public welfare statutes. The Margate Police Department has stated it will increase patrols in the area to ensure community safety and deter similar conduct.
Legal experts clarify that even if a firearm is legally owned, discharging it in a public or residential area without cause can still lead to criminal penalties. “In Florida, gun ownership rights come with significant responsibilities,” said attorney Michael Rosen, a Fort Lauderdale-based criminal defense specialist. “Firing a gun in the air, even on private property within an incorporated area, is still deemed illegal and punishable by jail time.”
Johnson was arraigned Monday morning at the Broward County Courthouse. A judge set his bond at $2,500 and ordered that he surrender any remaining firearms in his possession pending further court proceedings. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 15.
Following the arrest, the Margate Police Department urged residents to report any suspicious activity or illegal weapons use to authorities. “The public plays a critical role in helping us maintain safety,” Officer Corbin said. “When you hear something out of the ordinary—whether it’s gunshots, shouting, or suspicious behavior—please don’t hesitate to call 911.”
Local officials are also using the opportunity to remind gun owners about responsible firearm practices. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office offers free gun safety literature and lock kits upon request.
City leaders are considering new community outreach initiatives to address gun safety education and violence prevention. Margate Mayor Antonio Velez said in a statement that he stands behind law enforcement’s handling of the incident and supports stricter penalties for negligent firearm practices. “Margate is a peaceful city, and we won’t tolerate behavior that endangers our residents. We will continue working with police, schools, and community organizations to ensure everyone understands the consequences of misusing weapons,” said Velez.
The Margate Police Department has also made available access to its community policing and neighborhood crime watch programs through its. Residents interested in participating are encouraged to contact the department directly to learn more.
As the investigation continues, authorities reiterate that while there may have been no injuries this time, similar actions in the future could result in tragic outcomes. “This could have ended very differently,” said Officer Corbin. “We’re thankful no one was hurt—but others may not be so lucky next time.”
