Mexico President Sheinbaum hopes deported boxer Chávez Jr. will serve time in Mexico

CITY OF MEXICOThe president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, stated on Friday that boxer Julio C. Sarvez Jr. had not been arrested in Mexico before on a 2023 arrest order because he had primarily been in the United States since then.

Sheinbaum’s remarks came a day after American officials revealed that the boxer had been arrested in California for lying on a green card application and overstaying his visa. U.S. officials said he was being processed for expedited removal.

During her regular news briefing on Friday, Sheinbaum mentioned the charges Chavez faces for drug and arms trafficking and stated, “I hope he will be deported and serve the sentence in Mexico.”

According to his lawyer Michael Goldstein, the 39-year-old boxer was hauled up by numerous federal agents Wednesday while he was riding a scooter in front of a house in the affluent Studio City neighborhood of Los Angeles, which is close to Hollywood.

Days after the former middleweight champion’s defeat at the hands of influencer-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Anaheim, California, he was arrested.

Chavez divided his time between the two nations. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Chvez was arrested by immigration and customs enforcement officials for exceeding the duration of a tourist visa that he had obtained in August 2023 and that had expired in February 2024.

According to the bureau, Chvez made several false claims when he applied for permanent residence on April 2, 2024, claiming to be married to Frida Mu oz, a U.S. citizen. The imprisoned Sinaloa cartel kingpin Joaquin El Chapo Guzman has a grandchild that she is the mother of.

He is thought to have connections to the influential Sinaloa Cartel, which is held responsible for a large amount of Mexico’s drug-related bloodshed, according to U.S. officials.
