LONDON: Ben Shelton made a public appeal for his sister to be granted more leave from her position at Morgan Stanley, an investment bank, so that she could stay at Wimbledon to support him. It was successful.
In front of his sister Emma and his fiancée, Trinity Rodman, a star for the U.S. national soccer team, Shelton gave an on-court interview after moving on to play Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in the fourth round on Monday.
This week, I’ve been playing well. I’m not the only one here. I’ve got a fantastic team. Here are my parents. This is my girlfriend. My sister is here, too. She has attended every game I have played in this tournament thus far. The 10th-seeded Shelton, a 22-year-old American who has advanced to two Grand Slam semifinals, claimed that she has been the lucky charm. However, she will begin work on Monday back in the United States. Morgan Stanley is her employer.
As Emma covered her face with her hands, other onlookers jeered.
When Shelton defeated Marton Fucsovics of Hungary 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-2 on Saturday, he said, “It would be great if any of you have some (connections) and get her a couple extra days off so she can (stay and) we can keep this rolling.”
Ben can be heard asking Emma, “You got the week off or what?” in a little video that she shared on Instagram a few hours later. Ben shouts, “Standout, Morgan Stanley,” as she leaps up and down, her arms lifted and her smile broad.
With three blue heart emojis and the words “thank you, MS,” the message states that the return flight has been canceled.
Sonego was defeated in the Australian Open quarterfinals in January by Ben Shelton, who won all nine sets he played in Week 1 at the All England Club.
